What is growth?
The ability to push ourselves and expand our perception beyond our current limits. The limits may be in our current capacity to perceive (/know) or our ability to perform
If we are at the center, then everything we know or are able to do in our chosen field is like a circle around us. The size of this first circle is different for every individual basis his/her starting point. The second circle is everything that is yet known or the limits of ability in our chosen field. The complete new understanding of physics that Einstein made possible or the peak of human speed that Usain Bolt defined. These limits have been pushed and defined by the sheer depth of work done by some individuals. And then there is a third infinite circle - the space of what we don't know as possible yet.
The aim always is to expand the first circle, moving towards understanding everything that is 'yet known’. This always gives that initial spurt of growth.
Then comes the tough part - one that requires elements beyond training, skill or technique - to move the needle. We operate at this border of whats ‘yet known’, constantly pushing to expand beyond it into everything that's 'yet to be known', the space of infinite possibilities. We hope to make a dent, in small or large ways - and that becomes our life’s work.
This is the space where ‘great’ work happens - irrespective of the field. This is where the work starts feeling like magic, feels transcendent.
And then every once in few centuries, there would be someone like an Einstein who would double the size of that circle of what’s yet known (e.g. in physics) and move us further out into what there is to know.
But can we ever know everything there is to know? Can we make this circle not slightly bigger by pushing it, but infinitely larger? How does that leap happen? Does it happen by working at the circumference?
What if it happens at the center? Isn’t the center concentric with that largest infinite universal circle? Would it be another approach, if instead of pushing the boundary we fall back to and resonate with the center? Would we be able to glimpse the boundlessness of knowing if we are able to do this?
Is this oneness?
